Can I just reflect for a moment on an amazing read from last week? Furia is an absolute gem--start to finish. It captures the complexities of balancing cultural gender expectations and pushing against those norms and restraints in order to elicit change. The story also made soccer seem so exciting! I am so American football centric that I sometimes forget that football means something different everywhere else in the world! Maybe I'll have to watch a bit more action in the pitch in 2021.

First, can I just say that I love this cover! And the ship in her eye. What a great detail.
Okay, now for some thoughts. I started this as an audio book this weekend. I think it's even harder to listen to something new when the last story I heard was so good (Furia). But I like the reader's voice (which is essential) and I'm curious how the story is going to play out. Right now it's feeling a bit Pirates of the Caribbean but it's pretty early in the plot. I'm also wondering where the fantasy will live in the story itself.
Like Furia, Fable is also a Reese's YA Book Club pick. If I like the story then it may cement how I feel about her selections. Can they be trusted? Stay tuned!

If you enjoyed They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, then you will likely be interested in Displacement. This is also a story of America's Internment of the Japanese during WWII, but with a time travel twist. It reads very quickly. I like the story, I feel like the art work is a solid match for the tone, and I'm interested in the author's resolution of both the issues of internment and the time traveler. Solid read.
I am excited to start something new. I'm really leaning towards When You Trap a Tiger, this year's Newbery winner.
Happy reading!
