I actually picked up this book during silent reading with some 8th graders last week and fell in love with the writing and the main character, Delicious, by the second page. I love the author's word choice and that she's developing suspense because I know something has happened to the character in her past and I'm both anxious and dreading to find out the details. Definitely recommend and can't wait to finish!

I have always loved the writing of Jennifer Donnelly's writing. She has a wonderful vocabulary and a rich style of storytelling. This is a historical mystery and so far I'm delighted. The main character is searching for her father's murderer and hindered by the fact that she's a female in the nineteenth century. Intrigue and vivid descriptions make this a keeper so far.

Though this book is hefty and rather long at first glance, it reads like a picture book. The chapters are short and it's sprinkled with lots of illustrations. The story is told from the perspective of a small Jewish boy that is caught up in Nazi Germany and the struggle for survival. A great choice is you are interested in WWII.
Happy reading everyone!
