It's Halloween week! What is it about this holiday that sparks so much nostalgia? I love the memories of dressing up, walking around dimly lit streets (both excited and a little nervous), and gorging on candy. My favorite? Snickers. Every time. My least favorite? A toothbrush. I get it, but really? Way to steal the joy people!

Well, I had high hopes for this one and I was underwhelmed. I get what the author was going for (an apology for being a crap sibling) but I felt like the stories fell a bit short. The art was alright but the storytelling just wasn't compelling to me. I think I there will be students that enjoy the overall style which is similar to Smile and Roller Girl. But I don't think this will be a cult classic.

Black Boy Joy gives this librarian Reader's Joy. The short stories are by some of my favorite authors (Jason Reynolds, Kwame Alexander, Jerry Craft...) and fill a huge gap in representation in a range of genres. There are sci-fi, mystery, graphic novels, realistic fiction, adventure, poetry and more. Literally something for everyone to enjoy and relate to. I'm a huge, huge fan. Maybe a GJ contender? You'll have to wait and see!

I love Brian Selznick's writing and am captivated by his art.
So far, I have read the first page.
That is all.
Stay tuned!
Find joy in what you read and the rest is a bonus.
