Okay, so it's Scholastic Book Fair week. I love getting to be the gateway for students to have books of their own. I know that some students get excited about all of the trinkets but many more really are purchasing books. And that makes my heart happy.

In other news, I'm on a reading tear! I already finished four books this week (smiles): Lotus Bloom, Lumberjackula, Hearstopper v.1, and Freestyle. I was super happy with Lotus Bloom--beginning, middle, and end. I am interested to see if the book gets additional honors next month at ALA. Of the other 3 stories (all graphic novels), I really liked Freestyle the best. It combines beat boys and yo-yos. What!? And it works! What!? The story was fresh, the art style was solid, the characters are diverse without feeling like tokens, and I know my students will connect with this group of middle school kids and their friend dramas. Once I finished those I felt like I was back on a reading role. Horray!

I just started The Last Mapmaker. I mean I really just started it. I think I've read the first very short chapter.

I'm excited to read Soontorvat's latest book and expect it to be worthwhile since the story has been listed on multiple "best of 2022" lists.

This has been on my list for a while (duh...it's Ruta Sepetys), but it kept sliding behind other books. I am guilty of passing over titles if they are longer but not today!

My first surprise was that this is not historical fiction set in WWII. It's Romanian history in the 1980's. So I'm delighted and also excited to learn something new. I grew up watching gymnastics and the Romanian gymnasts were always outstanding. I'm curious to learn more about their country and what was happening outside of their sport.

How will you end the year? I hope it's with your very own best of 2022.

Happy reading!
