I love that March is a time to celebrate the female. I am fortunate to have had lots of strong women from whom I could draw inspiration. There are the obvious gifts: mom, grandmothers, aunts. But I was also inspired by women from music, television, and sports.

One of my first experiences as a music fan was of Helen Reddy. She sang "I am Woman," which became the E.R.A. anthem of the 1970s. I imagine I was quite a site marching around my parent's house at three singing all the words, "...I strong! I am invincible! I am woman!"

You will probably not be surprised to learn that even as a youngster I was obsessed with superheroines! Girl Power! Wonder Woman, Isis, and The Bionic Woman were three of my favorites. But I'll admit to being partial to Wonder Woman and Isis in part because their alter egos wore glasses. I started wearing glasses in first grade and was really insecure about them. It helped to see these amazing women rocking glasses just like me!

I was always searching for ways to figure out how to be awesome (even now): Nadia Comaneci (gymnastics), Dorothy Hamill (figure skater), Florence Griffith Joyner aka Flo-Jo (sprinter), Madonna (musician), Oprah (talk show host, entrepreneur), Martha Stewart (entrepreneur), Ruth Bader Ginsberg (Supreme Court Justice) and the first female Vice President: Kamala Harris!

The best part about now is the increased awareness of women's issues and our accomplishments. It's so easy to find sources of inspiration and ways women are continuing to be awesome! If you need some examples just check out the library presentation below.

Be amazing out there!
